Hon. Mohan Peiris, PC has been appointed as the 44th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka on 15th January 2013. His Lordship was the Attorney General of Sri Lanka from 2008 to 2011.
He was called to the Bar in 1975 and joined the Attorney General's Department in 1981 as a State Counsel, later serving as a Senior State Counsel for over 15 years.
The Sri Lanka Judges’ Institute is now 23 years old. These 23 years have coincided with many significant changes in the legal system of this country. The Judges’ Institute amidst host of challenges including physical and financial resources provided its services in training Judges to contribute to those developments in the judicial system assisted by the Ministry of Justice and Funding agencies.
The Sri Lanka Judges’ Institute was established by an Act of Parliament titled “Sri Lanka Judges’ Institute Act” No. 46 of 1985 to provide for the establishment of a Judges’ Institute and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
According to section 3 of the Act Sri Lanka Judges’ Institute has a Board of Management comprising of the Hon. Chief Justice and two Judges of the Supreme Court appointed by His Excellency the President. His Lordship the Chief Justice is the chairman of the Board and the administration and management of the Institute is vested in the Board of Management.
